WOYWW #425

Hello folks, and I'm back again. While we were away, The Range opened a new store in our town, and Tuesday was the first chance I had to go pay it a visit. It's not as big as many of their stores, but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of craft stuff they had still.
The bag full of scrabble type blocks- 200 of them- was £4. I also got a pack of ATC cards & envelopes, a quite large Happy Birthday stamp that was £2.50,  and two pots of metallic paint, one blue, one white. Both a quid, I think.

Both of these arrived while we were away- a set of Posca paint pens, and a set of waterbrushes with various sizes & shapes of brush.

So, the holiday then. Those of you that know us via Facebook will know about the Earthquakes felt on Kos while we were there, on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Made the holiday far more exciting than necessary, I can tell you.

We visited a Roman Amphitheatre that had been excavated.

On a boat waiting to go out on a trip.

The sun going down behind us.
This trip, on Saturday was to Nisyross, which is an active, but dormant, volcano. In fact the whole island is actually the crater, and the area you can see behind us is the caldera, which you can go down and walk across. Doug did, but the path down was getting too steep for me- if I'd gone all the way down, I'd probably still be there!

This was a view from one of the restaurants along the main street.
The harbour did take a lot of the effects of the eathquake.
I can tell you that nothing wakes you up faster than the bed shaking and stuff falling off shelves & tables at 01.30 in the morning.

This cycle lane had a split develop the whole length of it's joint to the main footpath.

A whole section of the harbour path- about a mile in length- dropped by between 4" and 12" for the whole length of it.

The cracks even went straight through the grass.

Large sections of slabs from walls fell away.

Here you can see the top from a stone pillar which has fallen to the pavement, with the toppled pillar above it.

The last earthquake felt by Kos was in 1933, the major tremor we felt was on the border between Kos & Turkey, which is just a few miles away across the sea.

This was a sort of bandstand in the centre of the old town square.

Many of the buildings in the older part of town suffered damage, and sadly, two people were killed by falling masonry.

The part that really amused us the next day was how the Greeks dealt with it. All along the path they just tied red & white plastic tape, and then put plywood boards over the affected footpath so people could still get on & off the boats. If this had been the UK, the whole town would have been evacuated, and the various committees formed would still be talking about what needed to be done!
This screenshot is off Dougs phone- he downloaded an Earthquake tracker app- yes, that really is a thing. This was taken on Saturday, and all those rings are the aftershocks, so you can see how many there must have been. Most too mild to be felt, but occasionally you could faintly feel a tremor through your feet, and on the odd occasion it was a bit stronger, and you felt stuff shake.

So, that's something that can come off the bucket list, rofl!
....and finally, something to make you smile today. 😀

Oooh, I almost forgot my exciting news! Some of you may have seen the announcement by Art From The Heart that they have Tim Holtz over for 3 days in September. As we were on holiday I asked my lovely friend, Debbie Rock( Tattered Rocks), if she would try to get me a place when she tried to book hers. And she got us both a place! So I get to meet the God of Crafters!

Glad you enjoyed your holiday (extra excitement and all!) and got home safely.. to new goodies, which is fab! I was watching (via FB) the disaster that was the booking for the Tim classes, so well done you (and Debbie) for getting your spaces. Helen #1

Glad you are safe what a holiday. Am interested about the app as we have a number of quakes here in Almeria can always tell when because I have to straighten the pictures. My daughter took me to a Range shop when I was in the UK and I was very impressed. Love the Scrabble tiles when I made a 'Seventy is only 13 in Scrabble' card had to stamp and cut the tiles out. Have a good week. ANickoana #4

Looks as if you had a fab holiday, in spite the earthquake. (My friends were also in Kos and were also shaken by the quake, didn't worry them either)
I love the Range, find it very to resist, you were very restrained, but those scribble letters are certainly going to be useful.

My friend, Carolyn (who runs the craft at Pickwell Farms) went on a crafting cruise with Tim Holtz... she said he is the most lovely, genuine and friendly guy ever - though he does go everywhere with his little personal entourage lol.
The earthquake pictures are shocking - how scary! However... it's good to see the humour in the situation too :) I know there's a joke in there somewhere to do with rolling out of bed in the early hours of the morning when there's a load of tremors and aftershocks - maybe something along the lines of the earth moving for you both ;)
The holiday does look fantastic - you really look at home there :)
Have a fantastic day!

Well my goodness Shaz, an earthquake would terrify me, but you still enjoyed a much deserved holiday. Your photos are great, thanks for sharing them.
Good news bits of stash and brilliant news about you getting to be near TH. Have you seen his new Halloween stamp and stencil sets, awesome, he was on FB with them, take care Kate x

Hope you enjoy your little workshop with Sir Tim. He really is a good teacher and if anyone can conduct a workshop with a large number of participants, he can. Enjoy!
Didn't read Facebook - kind of gone off it a bit, no time to spend on it or whatever. Now I wish I had because I knew nothing of your little excitement on holiday. Gosh Shaz, that was something to experience. Love your bit about the tape and our country - so true!
Just glad you are ok.
Hugs, Neet 8 xx

Glad you got back safely. If you're going to the Sir Tim of Holtz workshop on the Sunday do you fancy the Clarity open day on the Saturday at Leyburn? My crafty friend and I are going. That haul from the Range looks good. Hope you've fully recovered from the earthquake shocks. Sarah #?

@Craftyani
The app I installed (one of 3 i tried) is called Volcanoes & Earthquakes from the googles play store (android) you can set it to show any strength you like It shows as the name suggests volcanos , earthquakes or both. how close to you you are interested in , the area.
It has a free version or a small fee to remove the adds>
Another that I installed and liked is called lastquake both apps have a delay but they both are linked to official sensors .
of the two i would say lastquake is the easiest to use as it is just 3 tabs. significant quakes, near me or all.
there are some useful settings you can change too , like safety check, you can select a number of people that the app will send a text to check on you if it feels a major quake in your location :)
Hope this helps

Hi Shaz,

Great photos! I love the range, it's like a day out when I visit there. Your holiday photos are brilliant, it looks like you had a great time, in spite of the earth quake drama! Definitely one off the bucket list.

Hi Shaz! Good to know you're safely back! The Earthquake definitely added a different dimension to your holiday! It will make a great story to tell for years to come. Love all your photos! Those scrabble tiles look great! We might be moving to a town with a Range nearby - none around here at the moment. How exciting for you to see TH in the flesh! Make sure to do a selfie with him for your blog! Have a happy week! zsuzsa #26

Lovely holiday photos, Shaz - wonderful that you two are able to go away together and be active and enjoy yourselves, after everything you've been through. Getting our life back after cancer is such a gift, isn't it, and it makes you appreciate everything so much more! Very interesting about the earthquakes, too. Visiting an earthquake zone brings it home to us how fortunate we are in the UK having such good terra firma!

Happy WOYWW,

Rofl - "rolling on floor." Was that both the literal experience as well as the expression?
So glad you are both safe. It's too bad that 2 people had to die during that quake. My impression of the Greeks is that they were used to such seismic stuff even back during the B.C. era. Perhaps for them, this is just normal?
Looking forward to your Tim Holtz Report!
Happy WOYWW!

Wow, I'm glad you are OK - that earthquake must have been scary! I grew up in California where earthquakes are pretty common - but we moved away to Ontario to get away from them! That is a lot of damage you have shown - the scariest is the cracks through the grass! I'm sure it did add some excitement to your trip! And now you get to meet TH! How lucky are you!!!! I'm very jealous. . .! Thanks, for sharing, Lindart #33 (PS-the link takes you a page that says post does not exist - just click on "home", and it will go to the post)

Hi Shaz, most people go on holiday to relax and get away from everyday stress you know. I like the laid back response of the locals - sure beats the way things are dealt with here. And you seemed to enjoy your holiday despite the earthquakes. Can't think why The Range had the temerity to open a new store while you were away - how very dare they! That pack of waterbrushes looks useful. Have a great week. Elizabeth x #28

PS: I used Promarkers for the alcohol inks on that particular card but I've also been experimenting with Rangers inks too. Got the idea to use the Promarkers from a YouTube video, otherwise I would never have thought of them that way.

Blimey, the Kos trip was all experience, glad that the Greeks just got on with it and hope that you didnt spend the last few days just wishing you could get home sooner. I know nothing about POSCA pens, but you have reminded me that when I do serious shopping, I too must update my water brush collection. I dont use them often, but when I do, I curse the knackered brushes now! You must be delighted about the TH workshop, I bet it'll be amazeballs.

Hi Shaz please thank Doug for the info. I have downloaded the app to my phone.
Doc a little pleased with me as sugar is down from 134 to 120 but she wants it lower, also I have lost 2 and 1/2 kilos in weight so that is encouraging. Ani xx

So glad you had no bad effects from the earthquake and tremors! Wow! Great photos! And to meet Tim Holtz! How exciting! I've taken Ken Oliver's classes a few times and he's a hoot but never had the opportunity to meet Tim. Thanks for the visit and I hope you have a wonderful week!

Thank you for your visit, Shaz - glad you like my pantry. I found the idea of the magazine racks on Pinterest and thought what a brilliant idea. It works very well, and doesn't take up any room. I keep opening the door to see the light come on, and to admire the inside, not quite believing in it yet and thinking I'm going to wake up any minute and find the grotty old cupboard back again lol!

Less than 24 hours till the kittens come home! We are beside ourselves with excitement now. I've spent quite a bit of time today getting stuff ready for them. My hubby said it's like having a new baby and I know exactly what he means! The "nursery" is ready now!

Hugs to you both,
Shoshi xx

Happy WOYWW and thanks for your visit to my blog earlier. My first wow is about the earthquake. Must have been really scary. There was a smaller one during our first night when we went to Jamaica for our wedding - furniture banged about (including really big heavy wardrobes) and there was a power cut. I knew immediately what it was, as I lived in Tipton in the West Midlands for a few years and they have regular small quakes, but still scary when you are in a new country for the first time. My second wow is the tickets for Tim Holtz's workshop. I was tempted to see if I could get one, but realistically knew that I would not be able to afford all the travel/hotel etc. I look forward to hearing all about it. Ali x #11

Thank you for sharing your holiday photos Shaz. Glad to hear you had a good time. How sad to see the damage caused by the earthquake.

I've only been to the Range a couple of times but they have lots of lovely craft goodies. You certainly found some bargain. The scrabble blocks will be fun to use. Barbxx

How wonderful to read some lovely crafty and travelling news perhaps a little too exciting in latter. Was awaken years ago now in Sydney with bed shaking and and earthquake. The worst earthquake we've had is Newcastle one, it was bad and much damage and earth but other wise we're pretty good here. But you're right it makes you wake quickly.
Love what you said about the Greeks, Shaz, happy belated WOYWW, well done onshoping and coming TH show too how exciting.
